If you've ever wondered what the deal is with energy drinks and electrolytes, here is a simple guide to help you know more.

Walking football may not involve running, but players still:
Sweat (often more than they realise)
Lose key minerals like sodium
Play in bursts that raise heart rate
Need to prevent cramps and fatigue
Electrolyte drinks and powders help keep the body balanced so players stay sharp, hydrated, and safe.
What are electrolytes?
Electrolytes are minerals that help your body:
Stay hydrated
Keep muscles working
Maintain good balance and coordination
How walking football players benefit from electrolyes
Even at a walking pace, you can lose enough sweat to cause:
Leg cramps
Tiredness late in the session
Headaches
Slow reactions
Feeling light-headed
Electrolytes help by:
Replacing the salts you lose
Helping your body absorb water better
Keeping muscles working smoothly
Is there anyone who shouldn't take electrolytes or energy drinks?
It might be best to avoid if you have kidney disease, heart conditions, high blood pressure or diabetes. If you are on any medication or if you are in any doubt, always consult your doctor first.
Drink, powder or tablets?
Electrolyte Drinks (ready-made)
Easy and quick Good for warm weather or long sessions Examples: sports drinks, low-sugar hydration drinks
Electrolyte Powders
Mix with a bottle of water Usually low sugar Cheaper and customisable
Electrolyte Tablets
Drop-in tablets that fizz Usually light flavour Easy to carry in a kit bag
Which brand do I choose?
You don’t need specialist brands—examples include:
Low-sugar sports drinks
Hydration tablets
Electrolyte powders like “hydration mix” or “electrolyte blend”
There is a wide range of electrolyte drinks and powders on the market, but a firm favourite here at WF4W is the LiquidI.V. range. The powders come in a range of flavours, are not too sweet and can be purchased in most supermarkets.
Remember
Always test a new electrolyte to make sure it doesn’t upset your stomach; taking before and during a training session is a good idea…don’t ruin your match day!
