What football boots should you wear for walking football?

Choosing the right footwear for walking football is crucial for comfort, stability, and injury prevention.

Below is a practical beginner’s guide to help you choose the right boots based on comfort and support, surface and fit.

Tip #1 - Prioritise Comfort and Support

Walking football involves more controlled movement, lots of turning, and shorter steps. Because it’s a slower-paced game, players tend to spend longer periods with weight on their feet and joints.

Look for boots with:

  • Cushioned midsoles to absorb impact.

  • Supportive uppers that keep the foot secure without being too tight.

  • Good heel and arch support, especially for older players or those with previous foot or ankle issues.

  • A comfortable, wider fit if you have broader feet — many modern boots come in “wide” versions.

Tip #2 - Match Your Boots to the Playing Surface

For 3G or 4G Artificial Turf – Choose a pair of moulded stud boots. Most walking football sessions and matches take place on artificial 3G/4G pitches and will only allow you to play in moulded studs or sometimes astros (boots with a dimpled sole). You may also play on an astro surface - a 2G pitch - where moulded studs will be ineffective and here you'll need to wear astros. Most players keep a pair of astros and moulded studs in their kit bag to be ready for any surface.

Blades and metal studs aren’t permitted on 3G/4G surfaces and are best avoided in walking football all together.

Most pitches will have specific instructions on what boots are and aren’t permitted, but it’s safe to say you won’t go wrong with both a pair of astros and moulded stud boots in your bag.

Tip #3 - Choose the Right Fit

A properly fitted boot can prevent blisters, black toenails, and foot strain.

A good fit means:

  • About a thumb’s width between your big toe and the end of the boot.

  • Snug in the midfoot but not restrictive.

  • Enough width to avoid pressure points.

  • Keeping your normal walking gait feeling natural.

If in doubt, try boots on with a pair of football socks so you know the fit is right.

Tip #4 - Brands and Models Frequently Recommended for Walking Football

While the best boot depends on your foot shape, the following types are consistently praised by walking-football players:

  • Nike Tiempo – soft, comfortable, and supportive.

  • Adidas Mundial Team – classic leather boot with excellent cushioning.

  • Puma King – good for wider feet and comfort

Tip #5 - Final Tips

  • Try before you buy if possible — comfort varies greatly by model. Go to a store and get some advice. Ask your fellow players what boots they wear.

  • No need to spend a fortune - footwear doesn’t need to break the bank, cheaper entry model boots are great to start out with.

  • Absolutely do not wear running shoestrainers on 3G/4G turf; they lack side-to-side stability or any sort of friction and you are likely to slip and fall….we play walking football to try and lessen the risk of injury!

Remember

Always check the pitch regulations before you play at a new venue. This will tell you which type of boots you are allowed to play in.
