"Taking to the pitch for 24 hours straight takes grit and teamwork" - FDL Ladies raise funds for homeless charity with their Footballathon.
Fleur-De-Lys Ladies Walking Football Club played 24 hours straight to raise money for the club and local homeless charity HCT. WF4W went along to play in the games and take some photos.
Most women in walking football say they're making up for lost time playing the sport in middle-age. However, FDL ladies more than did that at the weekend with a 24-hour footballathon. The event was organised to raise money for the Helping Caring Team, a charity based in Blackwood, Wales, that cares for homeless and vulnerable individuals.
Members of the FDL team, partners, children and friends turned up with their tents on Saturday morning before taking to the pitch for the first of many games. There was a relaxed, friendly atmosphere and from the very beginning the team provided such a warm welcome.
"Supporting our local community is at the heart of everything we do," said team coach Chloe Jeremic West. "Taking to the pitch for 24 hours straight takes grit and teamwork, but every single minute played helps ensure we can continue giving back locally and make a lasting difference. Every donation, big or small, directly supports both our club's future and the brilliant causes right here in our area."
By the time the 24 hours was up, the club had raised over £800. And although shattered, the club were rightly very proud.
